Dear Tennis Lettermen and Friends,
It’s been a busy and successful week since we went to print with our October newsletter included here.
Some of our guys went to the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational. Freshman Hernus Pieters, who earlier in the week had won a singles title at the Southern Intercollegiates, claimed the doubles title in Atlanta along with Ignacio Taboada, and Hernus also made an appearance in the finals of the singles draw. Ignacio also made a nice run, reaching the semifinals, and another freshman, Campbell Johnson, made it to the quarterfinals. Also at the All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., Javier Garrapiz defeated four ranked opponents and reached the finals of the singles consolation draw. One of our newcomers, Sadio Doumbia, won three matches in the qualifying draw to earn a spot in the main draw.
Our next tournament will be the ITA Southeast Regional in Gainesville, Fla., beginning Oct. 22. This serves as the qualifying tournament for the National Indoor Singles and Doubles Championships Nov. 4-7 in New York. We will host one more tournament in Athens this fall – the Bulldog Scramble Nov. 5-8.
On a sad note, our freshman Hernus Pieters had to return to his native country of South Africa to visit his Mother who was very ill. She passed away this Saturday. Hernus was able to spend three days with her. Our hearts go out to the Pieters’ family.
Finally, be sure to mark your calendars for the 10-year reunion of the 2001 National Championship team on April 16, 2011. This will coincide with our big home match against Tennessee. I look forward to seeing you there.
Best regards & Go Dawgs!
